06.29.2006:: I had my first "real" show as the opening act to The Hat Party and This House is a Castle! They were both awesome; thanks again for asking me to play, Cindy! Anywho, there's a new song up on the MEDIA page, "Here's a Dollar, Here's a Dime"!

03.23.2006:: Using the combined power of a new SOUND CARD and SPRING BREAK, I've made a "studio demo" of "The Battle of Hope vs. Soul". It's on the media page, enjoy!

03.10.2006:: Well folks, here's the new site; I hope you all like it! It may be bland, but I bet you all find it interesting nonetheless! So enjoy, and revel in black and white!

THE FRIDGE

Reflections on... anything...

We're all social circled shapes is the new tongue twister sensation!

Staying up all night stinks, but somehow is invigorating at the same time. Heat-filled days and apartments do as well.

HE FLIES THROUGH THE AIR WITH THE POWER OF MUSIC!

ABOUT

My name is Drew Petersen, and I play music. After realizing that most songs are just vehicles for poor poetry, I thought I’d contribute. As long as it’s conscious, it’s not wrong, right? So this site is a collection of all my solo stuff, or even just stuff that features me... ok. I think that’s enough.

Lise (Detailing the Petrification Therein):: I told myself I was going to rerecord a bunch of the vocals, and then I realized that the song would never get out there (or would a year from now), so I said screw it: here's a song. A friend of mine moved away. Here's a generalized, simplified, genericized reason why. P.S. It's pronounced (Liz), for all you non-believers.

Social Circled Shapes:: I was playing on my piano, and thought, I'm going to do a quick recording of this song... since I like how it sounds with just me and my piano. So I made this quick demo. Why do friends have to go away? Why can't we just stay the way we are? Because time passes. Also, I didn't realize it until later that my sound card was popping (Vista...), so sorry about that.

The Battle of Hope vs. Soul - Remix:: Ok. You're probably thinking two things: homestar runner's do. do. do. do do de do... and "Man, that's cheap. He's going to turn into George Lucas now." And the truth is, NEVER! Now you can actually hear the vocals, wurlitzer, strings, cliche chorus, and everything else that's in there that you had strained to hear in the past. I didn't record anything new for this; I simply just changed how things sound. And yes, there is still panning (though not as extreme): if you truly enjoy recorded music, then you must be an active and involved listener. I'm going to leave the old version up (at the bottom) to compare the AWESOME SONIC DIFFERENCE!

This Is A Theme Song:: Soft pillows are nice to rip off. This song was suggested by the Haima, and I thought it was a good idea. Written in two hours, and recorded the next day, this song was completed in a matter of hours. Of course, don't poke your tongue too often with your cheek. Don't reverse that.

Lonely Summer Night:: Of course even songs about a drunk friend dying in a car crash involve a girl, right? This song was written 3 years ago, in 2004. Only recently have I finally been able to get a good recording of it, and this one even has a special treat: Miss Jessie Streed on Saxophones! Go!

Omaggio a Jones:: This one really needs some explanation, as it's not really a song. Luciano Berio was a pioneer in electronic music. For an independent study, I attempted to emulate one of his pieces, with a more modern spin. His piece, called "Omaggio a Joyce", involved recording his wife reading excerpts from the book Ulysses by James Joyce, and then manipulating that recording to such an extent that it became just organized sounds. I did the same, except that I used the final 45 minute recording of Jim Jones trying to convince his 913 followers to commit suicide. Look up Jonestown on Wikipedia if you have no idea what I'm talking about. The first 2:30 minutes are parts of the original tape spliced together, while the rest is the experimentation. The original tape is easily the most scary thing I have ever heard in my life.

The Spanish Refugee:: Although not a result of a war but that of an inner conflict, this song is about a crush. The crush has passed, but the song still exists. Funny that.

Smile:: Not to be confused with the Brian Wilson masterpiece, this song was written for someone that has a beautiful smile. This song was created almost completely in ACID using software synths. Listen for samples from Count Basie's "The Magic Flea", Ben Fold's "Protection", and The Beeves' "The Successful Operation". Good thing I'm not selling this for cash.

Concerning Swing Hitters:: I discovered that my old Casio keyboard, when overdriven through an analogue mixer, created some pretty cool drum sounds. Of course this is mostly due to lack of a real drum set in my apartment. To note: I do NOT want to kill my brother, nor do I have anything against lefties. One MORE thing... the dialogue at the end is taken from a Bizarro strip. I wrote this song about a year ago, but the strip was rather recent. I was totally first: booyakasha! As always, my singing is pretty weak, as is some of the instrumentation. It's called being lazy. Oh well.

Here's a Dollar, Here's a Dime:: Complete with Nintendo drums, the "get" sound from Zelda and overcompression, this song is the lyrical version of an idyllic dream of mine. [Note: not all dreams are idyllic!]

The Battle of Hope vs. Soul:: This is the first track that's actually "studio" quality. Studio... meaning my laptop... with NEW SOUND CARD POWER! Still... Listen for the chorus of "cliche" near the end. Where's the Lonely Hearts Club Band?

Watching for the End:: Recorded at 4:30 AM in a hallway on the 10th floor of Ogg Hall on my laptop using its crappy built-in mic. Go out of tune Ukes!
